Origins

Gabor György, usually called “George Gabor” in Time Crystal, was born in Budapest, Hungary on 15 December 1968, making him a Sagittarian. He is 43 on Crystal Day. In accord with Hungarian tradition, the family name comes first.

Childhood

His father was Gabor Ignác, the origin of whose name is obscure but is perhaps related to ignis meaning “fire”. Ignác was a staunch Communist, one of the few in Hungary when George was young. He was fiercely opposed to the economic reforms being introduced by the government, and therefore gave his new son very little attention. Ignác killed himself while preparing a home-made bomb when George was four.

George’s mother was a factory worker who worked hard to raise her seven children, having little time for George.

Adolescence

He could see that his father wanted to create a world that was fair to all people, including the poor, and the young George agreed with this, but he did not think that Communism was the answer. To him it seemed that reform was required. George also saw that protesting against reform was not only absorbing his father’s time and energy but stopping him from advancing and helping his family.
Gyorgy turned away from politics and decided he wanted to help people in some direct, practical way.

Adulthood

George was conscripted into the Hungarian army for three years and found he enjoyed the discipline and camaraderie but didn’t like the idea of killing people. When he came out he joined the Budapest Fire Department and quickly rose through the ranks to be the Chief of a small station.
He had two children in early 1990.

In 2009, seven of his men were killed in a huge fire in Budapest. At the time George’s marriage was also going through a difficult period and he blamed himself for the loss of life, suffering a mild mental breakdown.

His children had left home and to escape from the guilt the volunteered to work in CERN, where he has been ever since.

Personality

While working in CERN, his main aim in life is to help others, both through his work as a fire-fighter and as a volunteer mountain rescue worker. He nurtures and nourishes his crew, and is widely acknowledged as a superb team leader. However following his experience in Budapest he has no wish to progress up the career structure in CERN, even though he has the ability.

Physical Appearance

George is a huge man, over 6ft 3 tall, physically powerful and rugged. He is completely bald and he seldom smiles, giving his head the appearance of a weathered cliff.
