Accuracy and Inaccuracy in Time Crystal
I have tried to make Time Crystal as factually accurate as possible, probably spending far too long researching the details of CERN, Geneva and the history of the universe, but I want the reader to know that what I describe is mostly true. However, there are certain details which are not completely accurate, and in keeping with my desire for authenticity and trust, I should list here inaccuracies of which I am aware. I have changed some details it in order to make the plot work. In some cases I have been unable to establish the facts and have had to guess.
The descriptions of CERN, Geneva and the world are those which applied on Crystal Day, 5th April 2012.
The following is a list of known inaccuracies. No doubt it will grow as I continue to write the story.
Entroilia
All of the parts of the story dealing with Entroilia and anything else which is said to be “outside our universe” is pure fantasy and has no basis in fact.
Cosmic Monopole
Although there is strong reason to believe that at least one monopole exists somewhere in the universe, none have yet been found. Also there is no scientific support for the idea that a monopole, if it exists, could be captured by one of the detectors in CERN, or that, if it were captured, it might be transformed into a black hole.
Time Crystal
All details about Time Crystals, Time Tunnels and Time Bubble is invented in order to allow the characters to go back in time in a credible way.
ATLAS Start Up Date Accurately Predicted
But before I list the known inaccuracies, let me note that 5th April 2012 was really that day that the LHC started to produce stable beams after the winter shutdown. Details here and here. This is an amazing co-incidence, since I had chosen this date for Crystal Day several years before!
The SX1 building
It is not true that the three roofs of the huge SX1 building (which stands above the two shafts leading down to the ATLAS cavern) were designed to lift off in the case of a helium leak in the cavern below. I have taken this idea from the nearby gas building, whose roof is in fact designed to lift off.
I am not completely certain that there was a safety fence surrounding the two shafts in the SX1 building on Crystal Day. I suspect that, once the concrete caps had been laid over the shafts, the fences were removed.
If there had been a massive helium leak in ATLAS, and if the helium had been rapidly heated by contact with the quench heater, I doubt that the resulting explosion would have been strong enough to lift the concrete caps on the shafts, let alone blow off the roofs.
BP Garage
Alex Karolyi visits a BP garage in Episode 33. On Crystal Day, this was indeed a garage selling fuel and refreshments. It has since closed, and became part of a garage repairing vehicles.
